After nearly 80 years, an Indiana mail-hauling trucking company closes its doors

Creviston Trucking of Indiana started in 1948 hauling bulk mail from the Gary Post Office; owner Cindy Creviston is retiring, all drivers were hired on by the successor company, and more than 60 trucks and trailers go to online auction.

An Indiana trucking company that started by hand-carrying bulk mail from the Gary post office to waiting trains and helicopters is shutting down after nearly 80 years, according to CDLLife on Oct. 2. Creviston Trucking began hauling bulk mail in 1948 out of the Gary, Indiana Post Office — and before the end of that year, bought a dump truck as its first rig.

"Back in the 40s I can honestly say that with Randy – Randy Creviston was my husband – and his parents, they would literally take the mail from the Gary Post Office and they would bring it to the trains, they would bring it to the helicopters and then they would move it from there, so that was even before the trucks," owner Cindy Creviston said in a phone interview with WBBM.

Cindy says all of the company's truck drivers have been hired on by another trucking company taking over the former Creviston routes. More than 60 trucks and trailers owned by the company will be auctioned off online.

"Believe me, it was a very tough decision to even consider, but I decided it's time to retire and so, yes, I made that decision and I'm very happy about it," she said. Eight decades of hauling mail, ending not with a crash or a bankruptcy but with a retirement.
