FMCSA's Elison: 'hundreds' of ELD providers kept off registry, nearly 100 removed
At the NMFTA Cybersecurity Conference, Deputy Administrator Jesse Elison said tougher vetting has kept hundreds of providers off the registry and removed nearly 100, with an ELD rule rewrite in the works.
Summarized from Transport Topics.
FMCSA is tightening its grip on electronic logging devices, according to Transport Topics on Oct. 2 — and the agency says only one or two new ELD providers have been certified since the start of 2025.
Deputy Administrator Jesse Elison, speaking at the NMFTA Cybersecurity Conference 2026 in Long Beach, California, called ELDs a vulnerability that criminals exploit and criticized the self-certification process that lets manufacturers attest their own devices meet federal standards. “We’ve kept off hundreds, and we’ve removed upwards to a hundred, and we have law enforcement actions with respect to that,” he said, adding that a rewrite of the ELD rule is coming.
Elison also said FMCSA is trying to smooth out the rough rollout of its Motus registration portal, launched in May 2026, and credited a fraud task force from Vice President JD Vance plus U.S. attorneys in Illinois, Detroit, Indiana, and Ohio for focusing on industry fraud. He cautioned that FMCSA has limited authority on cargo theft and wants to expand it — without killing the decentralized structure that makes trucking efficient.
