Wyoming’s new Safe Pass requirements are now enforceable on Teton Pass, according to TheTrucker.com on Oct. 2 — and drivers who have not completed the online self-certification must use an alternate route.
The Wyoming Department of Transportation uncovered the new regulatory signs Oct. 1, making the requirements enforceable under Wyoming law. WY22 Safe Pass is a self-certification program covering safe mountain-driving practices — braking, steep grades, and vehicle weight restrictions. It applies to recreational vehicles, any vehicle towing a trailer, and vehicles or combinations with a gross vehicle weight rating of 10,000 pounds or more. About 1,841 drivers have self-certified since the Sept. 21 soft launch.
The Idaho Transportation Department is backing the program with warning signs along State Highway 33 and at border turnouts before Teton Pass. “Ignoring these safety materials and warnings could put your life, or someone else’s, at risk,” said Wyoming Highway Patrol Captain Marc Russell. Drivers can self-certify at safepass.wyoroad.info.
