Correction — September 28, 2026, 5:07 PM CT: An earlier version said dealers had installed incorrect brake valves during the earlier recall repairs, and gave a model breakdown (2,403 Cascadias plus 2 Western Star 49X) that did not sum to the 2,404 total. Per NHTSA recall 26V583, the earlier recalls applied a software-only remedy that proved incompatible with these 4x2 trucks; dealers will now replace the valves. The story now reflects the official NHTSA account and figures, with NHTSA added as a source.
Daimler Truck North America is recalling 2,404 4x2 trucks — certain 2020–2023 Freightliner Cascadia and 2022 Western Star 49X vehicles — under NHTSA campaign 26V583 (DTNA recall F1039). The affected trucks had already been repaired under two earlier brake recalls (NHTSA 22V817 and 23V073), where dealers applied a software-only remedy. DTNA later determined that the software remedy was incompatible with the 4x2 chassis configuration: it was designed to warn the driver if corrosion developed in the front-axle brake modulator valve, but it could not fully address the defect on these trucks. Dealers will now replace the brake modulator valves — a hardware repair — free of charge.
Corrosion in the front-axle modulator valves can cause the truck to pull to one side when braking is initiated by Electronic Stability Control or Roll Stability Control, increasing the risk of a crash. Normal service braking is not affected, and DTNA reports no crashes, injuries, or fatalities tied to the defect.
Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed November 8, 2026. Owners can contact DTNA customer service at 1-800-547-0712 (recall F1039) or NHTSA’s Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
