Recall: 12,715 Chevy Express and GMC Savana vans for a steering nut that may not have been tightened — including vans already cleared once

GM Authority reports General Motors has recalled certain 2025 and 2026 Chevy Express and GMC Savana vans under NHTSA campaign 26V718 because a steering gear assembly nut may not have been tightened during manufacturing. The recall covers 12,715 vehicles — 8,693 Express and 4,022 Savana — including vans inspected and cleared under the earlier recall 26V399, after investigators found 108 potentially defective steering gear serial numbers had been wrongly left off the original list. Owner letters are expected December 14, 2026.

General Motors has issued a safety recall for certain 2025 and 2026 Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana vans because a steering gear assembly nut may not have been tightened during manufacturing, according to GM Authority on Nov. 6, citing the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The recall, NHTSA campaign 26V718 (GM number N262579350), covers 12,715 vehicles in the United States — 8,693 Chevy Express vans and 4,022 GMC Savana vans — a population that matters to fleets because the Express and Savana are the standard cargo and shuttle vans in delivery, service and airport fleets across the country.

The defect traces to a supplier’s equipment. The nut was not tightened during manufacturing because of a malfunctioning part sensor at supplier Nexteer Automotive. GM had already addressed the same issue once, under recall 26V399 in June 2026 — but a subsequent investigation found that 108 potentially defective steering gear serial numbers had been incorrectly excluded from that original recall. The practical consequence is the one fleet managers need to hear: vans that were inspected and cleared under the June recall may still carry a defective steering gear, and they are inside this new recall until a dealer checks the serial number against the expanded list.

The hazard is the most basic one a steering defect can present. If the steering gear assembly nut detaches while driving, the result can be a loss of steering, increasing the risk of a crash. The warning signs named in the recall are reduced steering precision and an off-center steering wheel while driving in a straight line — symptoms a driver doing a pre-trip or a first mile out of the yard can actually feel and see. GM says it is currently unaware of any crashes or injuries stemming from the issue.

The fix is an inspection and, where the serial number matches the expanded list, a replacement: dealers will check the vehicle’s steering gear assembly serial number against the list of potentially impacted components and replace any matching assemblies at no charge. GM expects to begin mailing owner notification letters on December 14, 2026.

Fleets running 2025 or 2026 Express or Savana vans should not wait for the letter. Run the VINs against the recall now — Chevrolet customer service is 1-800-222-1020 and GMC customer service is 1-800-462-8782 — and treat a previous clearance under the June recall as no clearance at all until the serial number has been checked against the expanded list. Any van showing an off-center wheel at straight-line cruise or a new looseness in steering precision should be parked and checked before its next loaded run, not after it.
