1 in 7 trucks parked for brakes: CVSA's Brake Safety Week puts 2,369 vehicles out of service, and the 15.3% failure rate barely moved from last year

CVSA released its 2026 Brake Safety Week results on Nov. 6: 15,528 brake inspections across North America during Aug. 23–29, with 2,369 vehicles placed out of service — 15.3% overall and 15.1% in the U.S. Half the parked trucks failed under the 20% defective brake rule, hoses and tubes were the biggest named category at 600 violations, and drum and rotor out-of-service orders rose from last year. Next year's week runs April 18–24, 2027.

ATA's Costello: the freight market has turned — but it is a supply recovery, not a demand boom, and shipper spending is up 32% on flat shipments

American Trucking Associations Chief Economist Bob Costello told his annual U.S. Bank update that capacity finally came down enough to meet demand, helped by the non-domiciled CDL, English-proficiency and training-school crackdowns that began in spring 2025. Shipments are roughly flat, but shippers paid 32% more in the third quarter — and in Texas, spending rose 37% while shipments fell 12.9%.

No cab, no hitch, no driver: Humble Robotics raises $51 million to pilot its cabless electric hauler on port and warehouse runs under 250 miles

FreightWaves reports the Series A brings the San Francisco startup's total funding to $75 million, six months after a $24 million seed round. The Humble Hauler is a flat platform that carries 40-foot and 53-foot containers directly — 200-mile maximum range, 55 mph top speed, billed as 20% lighter than a tractor and trailer — and founder Eyal Cohen is aiming for customer pilots over the next 12 months, through August 2027.

Up to 40 years for shooting a Prius with a toddler inside: former driver Christian Ramos is sentenced for the I-83 attack — and Pennsylvania charges still wait

CDLLife reports Ramos, 30, of Illinois, was sentenced Nov. 5 in Maryland for the June 18, 2025 shooting on southbound I-83, in which none of the Prius's three occupants, including a two-year-old, was injured. A jury convicted him in April 2026 of attempted first-degree murder and two counts of attempted second-degree murder; troopers found a loaded .45-caliber handgun, several hundred rounds and spent casings in his truck, and he also faces four counts of attempted criminal homicide in York County, Pennsylvania.

Pagosa's Piedra River fix is now a four-week job: temporary bridge needs new abutments, Wolf Creek stays shut, and Highway 84 is the lifeline

CDOT Region 5 Director Julie Constan told the Pagosa Springs Town Council Tuesday night that a drilling team is checking the river banks for concrete abutments and the temporary bridge is likely a four-week process. U.S. 160 is open from town as far as the bridge with single-lane stretches, Highway 84 south is stabilized, CO 151 may get one lane by the weekend, and the downtown reconstruction will not finish in 2026.

Louisiana and Colorado have also ended their programs, seven-plus states have resumed issuing under the new rule, and Overdrive reports the D.C. Circuit could rule any day on California's bid to vacate FMCSA's noncompliance findings.
